Guernsey Ladies FC
On Saturday 30th March Guernsey Ladies FC took a development group to Jersey to play a senior 11v11 friendly against Rozel Rovers Women.
The game was used as a learning experience for the young group to familiarise themselves as a team and for some it was their first official 11v11 game. The team showed great potential playing attacking football and finding their natural positions throughout the game. Head Coach Richard Sutton commented:
“ I am really pleased with how the girls have taken to this game and the overall performance of the team was positive, we have elements to work on but as a starting point I am happy”.
Guernsey Ladies FC are awaiting the return trip from Rozel Rovers to play again before the end of the 2018/19 season.
The squad of 14 players who travelled to Jersey consisted of 8 players under the age of 18 of which, many had not had any experience in playing 11-a-side before. Four of the girls have progressed through the Mourant Girls Academy and become valued members of Guernsey Ladies FC, showing great passion and enthusiasm for Womens Football. Through the pathway provided by the work of Football Development Officer, Joelle Pengelley, Guernsey Ladies FC now has numerous girls from the Mourant Girls Academy progressing to training with the Ladies team as soon as they are old enough and they are looking forward to being eligible to play matches for the club.
Guernsey Ladies FC and the Mourant Girls Academy have a strong link with players working towards Goal21 and Joelle who is also a member of GLFC commented:
“It was a great day for the club to be able to travel to Jersey with a squad of players that was a mixture of both youth and experience, and allowed us to put our training into action and play this friendly fixture. Playing alongside players that I have coached over the past 5 years was a great privilege and to see them progress into senior footballers, shows great prospect for the future.”
Guernsey Ladies FC aim is to aid in the development of local Women & Girls football at all ages with the aspiration of Guernsey entering a female football team into the 2021 Island Games which will be hosted in Guernsey and will re-energise Womens football in Guernsey for the foreseeable future.
If you are aged 15 and over and are interested in trying or coming back to football please come along to Guernsey Ladies FC training on Wednesday nights at Victoria Avenue from 6.30pm or contact Joelle Pengelley:
