Deloitte Corbet Cup and Shield Finals
Following the semi-finals held on the evening of Thursday 3rd May, the teams competing in the finals of the 2017/18 Deloitte Corbet Cup and Corbet Shield have now been confirmed.
Deloitte Corbet Cup
After a long season, which started back in September 2017, the Deloitte Corbet Cup Final will see Guernsey Rangers compete against Northerners AC after victories over St Martins AC and UCF Sylvans Red respectively.
Guernsey Rangers have performed consistently well throughout the season when winning 17 of the 18 league matches to finish top of the league table, whilst St Martins qualified for the semi-finals after finishing the league matches in fourth place.
After taking a three-goal lead in the semi-final, Guernsey Rangers then had to contend with an impressive St Martins comeback that left the match poised at 3-3 before finally claiming a place in the Final with a 6-4 victory.
In the second semi-final, second-placed UCF Sylvans played third-placed Northerners AC, and in a closely contested match, it was Northerners that prevailed to claim a 2-1 win.
Deloitte Corbet Shield
The Deloitte Corbet Shield semi-finals provided two very competitive and evenly contested matches with the team that finished top of the league table, UCF Sylvans White, securing a 3-1 victory over Rangers Red.
In the second semi-final, the same scenario unfolded as in the Corbet Cup with the third-placed team, Geomarine Rovers, defeating the second placed team, Rihoy North, 3-2 in what was another close match.
The standard of football on display in these semi-finals, and throughout the season, is a testament to the player development and coaching taking place in Guernsey’s Charter Standard clubs, with the Deloitte Corbet Cup and Shield competitions providing the young players with their first experience of competitive club football.
Guernsey FA Chief Executive, Gary Roberts commented: 'The Deloitte Corbet Cup and Shield competition remains one of the most popular tournaments in local football and the growth in the number of players participating this season has led to the largest number of teams ever competing. This growth has necessitated two distinct divisions for the first time.
'It is important to recognise and acknowledge the long-term and on-going support that Deloitte continues to provide to local football and specifically towards these competitions, which are important in the development of Guernsey’s young players as they transition from minis into youth football. We now look forward to what we expect will be two very competitive finals on Thursday 10th May.’
David Becker, Partner at Deloitte, added: 'The growth in the tournament is a testament to its popularity and the hard work of both the Guernsey FA and the clubs, coaches and parents.
'Minis and youth football coaching at clubs is all done by volunteers and their contribution to grass-roots football cannot be overestimated. We're looking forward to the finals on the 10th May and wish all the players the best of luck in their matches.'
The two finals will both be played at the Corbet Field as follows:
