SUMMER FUN FOOTBALL FESTIVAL RETURNS FOR A SECOND YEAR

Following the success of last year’s event, the Guernsey Football Association (GFA) is once again hosting the Deloitte Summer Fun Football Festival on Saturday 16th June at Victoria Avenue.

The event celebrates the culmination of the GFA’s free school coaching sessions which are aimed at getting children across the Bailiwick involved in football.

This year’s festival will see mixed teams from Years 3 and 4 playing in a round robin format. There is also a girls only section at the festival, where girls from Years 1, 2, 3 & 4 can turn up and play. 12 teams have already signed up for the year 3 & 4 festival , promising to make this event even better than last year’s.

A bouncy castle and inflatable goal will also be available for youngsters and less competitive festival-goers to enjoy.

The GFA’s team of community football coaches has held regular coaching sessions in 12 primary schools, including Le Rondin and Le Voies since the start of the academic year, thanks to the long-term sponsorship by Deloitte.

The team spends half a term with each school, working with the teachers to offer weekly training sessions for classes of around 30 children. Over 500 children benefit from this activity, which has an emphasis on building confidence and reinforcing the importance of good effort, play and behaviour, instead of criticising negative responses or mistakes.

The football festival will follow the same themes, with all participants will receive a certificate and medal for taking part.

David Becker, Partner at Deloitte, says, ‘We’re committed to supporting community sport and working with the GFA to deliver these coaching sessions to local school children has been really rewarding. Last year, the Summer Football Festival proved a huge hit, and we’re looking forward to seeing even more children enjoying a kick-around in June.’

Angus Mackay, Football Development Officer at the GFA, says, ‘The Football Festival got off to a great start last year, and this tournament has attracted even more teams. We urge any schools who have not yet signed up to get involved.’
